Transcoding
Last updated on Feb. 8, 2010
Video transcoding is an important part of the Bits on the Run system. By converting your content to the optimal formats and sizes, we ensure maximum compatibility with webbrowsers and (mobile/settop) devices, plus instant and fast video playback. Our scaleable transcoding farm ensures fast delivery at all times.
Uploading
Quickly upload a video within the management dashboard or upload multiple videos using our FTP functionality. Videos can also be uploaded using our API, offering user generated uploads in your site or video upload features in your CMS. Dimensions and duration of every video are automatically detected. By leveraging the power of the open-source FFmpeg framework, virtually any video format can be uploaded.
MP4 encoding
By default, every account contains templates to convert videos to the H.264 / AAC format. Default templates range from Web to HD quality. Tune these templates by setting your own quality or bitrates. We use the best-of-breed x264 video encoder for extreme high-quality and fast MP4 transcodes.
Other formats
Other transcoding formats are also available: FLV (for maximum Flash Player compatibility) and MP3 (to offer podcast versions of your content). Leverage our passthrough option to instantly publish and stream video without an intermediate transcode (if your original video is already optimized for web playback).
Watermarking
Watermark videos to add your branding or discourage theft. This works with PNG, JPG and GIF images and supports transparency. Watermarks can be positioned in any corner. An unlimited amount of watermarks can be created.
Compatibility
Videos transcoded by Bits on the Run are compatible with a wide range of devices. Here is a partial list:
- Mobile devices like the Ipod/Iphone or Windows Mobile, Google Android or Symbian based phones.
- Media centers like Boxee, XBMC, iTunes, Philips NetTV and Miro.
