Upload large files over FTP
Last updated on March 2, 2010
You can upload files to Bits on the Run using the well-established FTP protocol. This protocol is safe, fast and reliable.
Step 1: Get an application
Because there are countless FTP applications available and many are only available for Mac or Windows we have chosen to support FileZilla. FileZilla is a free, open-source, FTP program that works on Windows, Mac and Linux.
These settings work in other FTP software packages as well, the settings just might be named differently. If you want to use another FTP package that is no problem. For any questions regarding it, please contact the developer responsible for your program.
Step 2: Connect
Start up FileZilla and open the site manager which you can find under File - Site Manager. Create a new Site with the following information:
- Host: ftp.bitsontherun.com
- port: 21
- Servertype: FTP - File Transfer Protocol
- Logontype: Normal
- User: Your Bits on the Run login name.
- Password: Your Bits on the Run password.
Once that is all filled in, press Connect. You should see an empty folder on our side. If you have trouble connecting, please check if everything is set exactly according to the description above.
Step 3: Upload
Upload files by simply dragging them into our empty dropbox. Our system will detect when a transfer is completed and then automatically transcode the video.
Should the transfer get interrupted (e.g. your laptop's battery runs out), it is possible to resume a transfer: When you login to our FTP again, the half-finished upload will still be there. Drag the video into our dropbox again and then confirm with Filezilla you want to resume the transfer.
Do NOT direct Filezilla to append to the video, since that means the entire file is appended to the alreaady existing file, resulting in a useless video!
